Adularescence is the optical phenomenon that gives Moonstone its characteristic floating glow named after Adularia, the Swiss locality where Moonstone was first studied scientifically. It is caused by light scattering between alternating layers of orthoclase and albite feldspar within the stone. Good quality Moonstone has a vivid, clearly centred blue or blue-white glow that appears to float just beneath the surface and moves as you rotate the stone. The best AAA grade stones show a deep, three-dimensional adularescence that is immediately visible in natural light. Poor quality Moonstone will appear flat, milky, or only show adularescence under direct bright light; it fails at retail display.
White Moonstone is the classic variety translucent white with blue-white adularescence, the most widely stocked form. Rainbow Moonstone (technically White Labradorite) displays vivid multi-colour flash including blue, violet, and gold, the most visually spectacular variety and a top jewellery performer.
