It is not magnetic (or only very weakly so), has a slightly rough or granular texture when unpolished, and shows a red-brown streak if you scratch it on a rough surface. Magnetic Hematite is a man-made product that is manufactured from iron powder and resin, pressed into shape, and has strong magnetic properties. It looks very similar to polished natural Hematite but is not a natural stone. Both have their place in retail, but they must be labelled and sold correctly.
